Return to stories about caring for our planet.

Background:

Christians believe that God created the world and has given us the responsibility to take care of it. This story is broken into two sections. The first is a poem from the Old Testament, written by King David in the book of Psalms. He describes his wonder at creation. The second section tells us about the life of the early followers of Jesus and is found the New Testament book of Mark. It illustrates how caring for other people is part of caring for God's creation. In caring for each other we demonstrate how God cares for us.

Follow up questions:

  1. Can you think of a time when you have been out in the world and felt a sense of wonder at its beauty in the same way that King David did?
  2. Is it ever OK to use the world's resources without worrying about whether we are taking care of the planet too?
  3. Can you think of any examples of projects you are aware of that demonstrate caring and sharing beyond your school community?
  4. If you could make the world a better place and bring about one change what would it be? Can you think of any action you want to take as a result of your reflection?

God's Beautiful World

First, a poem from the Book of Psalms:

When I look at the sky, which you have made,

at the moon and the stars, which you set in their places—

what are human beings, that you think of them;

mere mortals, that you care for them?

Yet you made them inferior only to yourself;

you crowned them with glory and honour.

You appointed them rulers over everything you made;

you placed them over all creation:

sheep and cattle, and the wild animals too;

the birds and the fish

and the creatures in the seas.

O Lord, our Lord,

your greatness is seen in all the world! (Psalm 8)
